Play the Fishing Game

New version available beginning Jan. 1, 2012: The link below is to a new version. Teachers who have registered classes for previous versions of the game will have to register again.

I have completed some work to fix several game login bugs and to clarify the licensing and login procedures (2/23/2012). I am pretty sure they are fixed, but if you have more problems, please contact me at the email in the "About" link. Thanks.

Link to the Fishing Game <Fishing Game> to play the game and for teachers to set up new classes or edit existing ones. Important!! If the game doesn't load or if there is only a grey screen, you may need to update your shockwave player. The link is at the top of this page.

Link to the Class administration application, so you can follow your students' progress: <Fishing Game Teachers Administration> (this works best on Safari. On the Mac, Firefox has trouble with it.)

Suggestions:

  • Clear your browser cache before loading the new game.
  • Game overview and tutorial videos are available. Watch these short tutorials to play the game most effectively.

Teachers:

  • Register a new class by going to the <Fishing Game> screen and clicking "Manage My Classes". If you don't have an account, you will need to click the "Make New Account" button, which will take you to the new account page. You will get an email from the account management system. Verify your account by following the instructions on the email. Be sure to set a password that you can remember. Then return to the game, click "Manage My Classes" and enter your email and password.
  • Note that the first time you register a class, 30 free licenses will be provided.
  • Follow student progress by going to <Teachers Administration>
  • Click here to get instructions for setting up a large class, with teaching assistants.
  • Are you are the only teacher for your class? Be sure and click the round question icons in the registration screen for information on the entry fields for your class.

Teachers, after you have registered your class:

  • Retrieve the class access code(s) from your email
  • Email the access code to students who are in the class or "section" that is appropriate
  • Suggest to the students that they watch the game tutorial video prior to playing the game. It is a good investment of their time and they will get more out of the game if they watch it.
  • Use the Teachers Administration tool to monitor student progress.

Game emails not received? See below for options.

  • I have had problems with emails getting through to some email addresses. I think this is fixed, but please let me know if you don't get the emails from the game.
  • Check your spam or junk mail filter(s).
  • Get a gmail account (these are free, but you've got to put up with Google tracking you)
  • Contact me for any reason. I like user feedback and comments!

A downloadable pdf of the game instructions is available, for a student handout. These instructions are also available within the game itself.

Minimal license fees are now being assessed. Teachers who are registering a class, in the new system for the first time, automatically get 30 free licenses.

New game features:

  • Highest score achieved by classmates is displayed
  • Student time on task has been improved to only include time the student is actively playing the game
  • Time zones now work and start and end times for the assignment work for your time zone
  • Other bug fixes

Some versions of Firefox work better than others, for this game, so if you have problems, please switch to Safari.

Snow Leopard:

Current versions of the game work in Snow Leopard.
